Wight Eagles hosted Division 1 side Rushmoor in the Hampshire Women’s Invitation Cup on Sunday (September 29).
Wight Eagles 2-1 Rushmoor Community
Looking to bounce back from defeat the previous weekend, the Islanders came out the stronger of the two teams, enjoying some good early chances.
The Island side pushed forward towards the end of the first half, with a good run from Susan Cullen leading to a free kick on the edge of the box.
Former manager Ellena Boakes beat the keeper with the set piece but clattered the crossbar before Abi Joyce’s attempt was saved.
Within two minutes of being substituted into the match, Georgia Dye was brought down in the box and stepped up to slot the penalty away.
A through ball by Jess Green found Kira Smith, who found herself one-on-one with the keeper and coolly netted to seal the win.
Rushmoor got a consolation goal in the dying embers, but it was not enough to stop the Eagles flying into the next round.
Eagles boss Dan Verstraeten said: “We had a regroup from last week, and the ladies worked hard at training to play the style of football we needed today and fully deserved the win.”
