An exciting afternoon of football saw two of the Isle of Wight’s most competitive football sides take all three points.

Cowes Sports got the better of AFC Stoneham in a five-goal thriller in the Wessex Premier Division.

The Islanders opened the scoring on 23 minutes through Jez Conway, who volleyed in from a free kick; his effort clipping the post on the way in.

Flynn Jackman netted a second five minutes thereafter, latching onto a flick on from a cross.

The Islanders spurned a chance to extend their lead further but went into the break two goals to the good.

Second half, Stoneham rallied, and six minutes after Jackman was denied his brace the visitors cut the deficit.

On 85 minutes, Stoneham restored parity from a stoke of fortune, but Will Bridi came to the rescue just a minute later, tapping in at the back post from a cross.

Cowes saw the game out to claim all three points.

East Cowes Vics, meanwhile, were held by Whitchurch United in Division One.

The result sees the Islanders drop down to third in the table, albeit with a game in hand and just a point shy of Frimley Green and Alresford Town.

Fellow division one side Newport, however, comfortably beat Romsey Town on the road, winning 3-1.

The Islanders pressured the hosts early on and it was Ji Nash who gave his side an early lead, latching onto a cross from Kai Grace.

The hosts levelled on 23 minutes, but ten minutes thereafter, Joe Butcher restored Newport’s lead following some fine play from Nash out on the left.

Going into the break with a narrow lead, Newport’s George Holbrook hit the post from a corner on 52 minutes.

To the delight of the away fans, Jordan Browne converted a penalty on 65 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.
