Wight Eagles Ladies started their 2024/25 Hampshire County Women’s Football League Division 2 season off at home against AFC Totton.

Eagles started debutants Emma Webb – signed from Shanklin – and academy graduate Erin Sharp in their opening fixture.

The Island side’s first major chance of the game fell to Webb, whose header from a well-worked Ellena Boakes cross flashed just wide.

Shortly before half time, a Millie Tinsley corner into the Totton box dropped from Kira Smiths, whose shot was blocked and fell to Jess GREEN to slot home.

With 20 minutes remaining, Eagles were caught in possession following a corner, allowing Totton to push up the field and net an equaliser.

Skipper Katie Rand fouled the Totton striker in the box to give away a last-minute penalty, but the striker skied her spot kick over the bar.

Manager Dan Verstraeten said: “It was a tough game in the end.

"We done everything we could to push on after taking the lead.

“I thought Webby and Erin were fantastic, and we really have a strong core now, a point is better than none, so I’ll take that.”

Next up, Wight Eagles welcome Pace FC on Saturday (September 8) at Beatrice Avenue.
