Newclose Cricket Club provided the venue for an exciting two-day fixture between Isle of Wight U18s and Cornwall U18s.

The Island side was made up of young, inexperienced players, while Cornwall fielded a strong, experienced team.

The visitors won the toss and invited the home side to bat first.

Isle of Wight accrued a respectable 188 from 52 overs with Josh Carpenter top scorer on 89, supported by Ian Hailes (27).

With some fine bowling and fielding from the Island youngsters, Cornwall were restricted to 196.

Freddie Gurney was the pick of the Island bowlers, claiming seven wickets.

On day two, the Islanders batted first once again.

With some excellent shot selection from Sam Mills (78) and Josh Carpenter (71), a total of 237 was made.

This left Cornwall needing to score 230 runs in 47 overs which they achieved with seven balls and four wickets to spare.

Island Coach, Kev Winchcombe, said: “This was a really impressive performance from such a young side.

“As always, there were parts of the game where the players could improve, but for me there were so many positives from their performance.”

The Islanders are set to battle it out in another two-day game against Hertfordshire at Newclose starting on Tuesday, August 27.
