IT WAS a difficult weekend for several of the Isle of Wight’s most competitive cricket sides at the weekend.
In Division One of the Southern Premier League, Ventnor were beaten by 39 runs.
Batting first, Sarisbury hit what proved to be an insurmountable 246, despite the efforts of Rob Snell (3-56), Dineth Thimodya (2-38) and Daniel Cox (2-49).
Thimodya (66), Cox (59) and Henry Edwards (40) were the pick of the Ventnor batsman, but they fell narrowly short, hitting 207.
Over in Division One of the Hampshire League, Ryde were well beaten by a travelling Bournemouth II side.
The Islanders posted a disappointed score of 143 which Bournemouth bested with five wickets to spare.
Ian Hailes (3-30) was the pick of the Ryde bowlers.
Meanwhile, in Division Three, Shanklin and Godshill came undone against Old Netley & Highfield, losing by 21 runs.
Harry Moore (72) was in fine form, and Ben White (43) caused the opposition some difficulties as the Islanders registered a score of 224.
In reply, Old Netley hit 245; Matthew Lambourne (3-46) and Tom Quaife (2-39) giving their all to limit the opposition as best they could.
Fellow Division Three side Ventnor II’s game against New Milton II, on the other hand, didn’t go ahead: the latter conceding.
Over in Division Four, Ryde II were hammered by Ampfield & North Baddesley, losing by a staggering 374 runs.
Ampfield elected to bat first and posted a formidable score of 412, with one batsmen hitting a sublime 233 not out.
Ryde’s Alex Barton (2-87) was the only bowler of note as the Islanders struggled to peg the opposition back.
In the group stage of the Senior Cup, Freshwater beat Shanklin and Godshill II by 123 runs.
Justin Pinder (57) and Graham Gosden (41) helped Freshwater to 269, despite Ryde’s Steve Egerton-Read (3-35) taking scalps.
Ryde’s Egerton-Read (83) led the line again on the attack, but Freshwater’s Sam Vandecasteele (2-7) and Gary Freeston (2-14) showed their class.
Ventnor III, meanwhile, beat Northwood by six runs thanks in large part to bowlers Marcus Laker (5-21) and Archie Lucy (2-40).
Northwood batsman Kevin Cooper (62) and bowlers Stephen Keates (3-41), Joshua Procter (2-31), Neil Redmond (2-16) all performed well.
Newport’s game against St Helens didn’t go ahead, the latter conceding.
Cowes, on the other hand, beat Newport by 34 runs in the Fred Winter Cup competition.
Josh Jones (5-27) and Jason Heap (3-17) were too much for Newport, despite strong showings from fellow bowlers Olly Pease (3-27) and A Brett (2-31).
