The Isle of Wight’s Newport Football Club got their season off to a stellar start – hammering mainland opposition in their first fixture of the new season.

NEWPORT 5, LYMINGTON TOWN 1

Welcoming Lymington Town to Beatrice Avenue, the Islanders took the lead on nine minutes; Jordan Browne converting from the penalty spot.

Newport wasted further chances to extend their lead soon after, but found a second on the 21-minute mark; Browne bagging himself a brace.

A third goal came on 33 minutes with Browne at it again, scoring a hat-trick.

Ten minutes thereafter, Newport made it four, profiting from a corner which was turned in by a Lymington player.

Newport were dominant throughout, and stopper Leon Pitman did well to deny Lymington a route back into the game.

Second half, hat-trick hero Browne made way for Jamie Wright early on, while Harri Catania and Keelan Walsh made way for Henry West and Matt Oatley.

Newport thought they’d made it five on 59 minutes, only to be denied by the offside flag.

The visitors made efforts to reduce the deficit, but Pitman held firm.

On 80 minutes, Newport finally scored the fifth; Jamie Wright the provider from a corner, Brad Young netting.

The game ended 5-1 with the visitors scoring a late consolation goal.
