SHANKLIN-Sandown Rowing club has returned to the Isle of Wight from the British Rowing Championships in Nottingham with three golds and a bronze medal.

The competition took place at the National Watersports Centre, where nine young athletes from the club made a splash — reaching all their finals and setting personal best records.

The club's outstanding success was by Louis Sheasby, 15, who bagged two of the three golds, in a coup for the team.

Sheasby, along with Carter Horrix, were proven favourites for the J16 pairs event, dominating their final from start to finish.

Both Sheasby and Horrix, who recently represented Great Britain in the Anglo-French challenge match in Rouen last month, have remained unbeaten this season.

Their gold medals were awarded by former Olympic coach, Martin McElroy.

Following their double victory, both Sheasby and Horrix returned to to individual races.

In a surprising twist, Sheasby established a significant lead in the time trial, semi and final — outpacing his Scottish GB team-mate by ten seconds to secure his second gold.

Meanwhile, Fred Giemza-Pipe stunned in the J18 single sculls by rounding out his performance with a third place grab and a place in the A final.

Emerging from behind to topple established scullers, Giemza-Pipe managed a stand-out performance to secure bronze.

Sharing in triumph were partnered team-mates Arlo Adds and Carter Horrix from the J18 pairs.

They posted a personal best in the C final, after a solid time trial, along with J14s Rose Collier and Layla Katirewa, who progressed to the D final.

A rather unfortunate injury, however, hit the girls' J14 quads, preventing them from capitalising on their secured place in the B final, after what was a robust time trial.

Capping the games, Shanklin captain, Garry Walters, paid tribute to the team for their dedication and triumph, noting their performance, as a club, as their most successful British Championships to date.

Walters said: "Congratulations to our team of nine, who represented the club and Island so well and gave it their absolute best, both in training and in their finals."
