Young Isle of Wight footballer, Schyler Gabbard-Jaspers, is on the road to becoming a professional player, after winning a dream chance to trial for AFC Wimbledon's Pathway Academy programme.

Last month, the Wight Eagles' Under 14s goalkeeper, who currently plays in the Hampshire League, took part in three-day trial.

The AFC Wimbledon fan currently trains with Wight Eagles twice a week and takes part in goalkeeper coaching during the holidays.

Schyler has been attending Wimbledon Women's football matches since 2021, when she first met her mentor, fellow goalkeeper and Dons' number one, Faye Baker.

The young player is described as "utterly fearless with a big kick" and "always putting her body on the line to make a save."

Schyler said: "I am extremely grateful to have been given this fantastic opportunity.

"I want to thank my coaches at Wight Eagles, my parents, and my mentor, Faye, for all their support in helping me work hard toward my dream."

Chairman, Dan Verstraeten, said Schyler has great determination and works hard.

He said: "It’s great for the club to have a girl representing us and the Island."
