TWO of the Isle of Wight’s most competitive football teams returned to action tonight (Tuesday).
The Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup resumed at Westwood Park, with Wessex League highflyers Cowes Sports taking on Island League Division 1 leaders Whitecroft and Barton Sports.
W&B have been scoring for fun in the league, but were well beaten by a dominant Yachtsmen side, who won 5-0.
The breakthrough came on the 22-minute mark – Brandon Hayward smashing the ball into the net from a corner.
Cowes Sports piled on the pressure and doubled their advantage 13 minutes thereafter – Fin Phillips helping the ball in from a Hayward volley.
The Yachtsmen made it 3-0 ahead of the break through George Carter-Knight, who converted at the back post from a cross.
Carter-Knight went on to bag himself a brace on 50 minutes from a deflected effort, and John McKie converted a penalty on 65 minutes to add some further gloss to the scoreline.
Newport, meanwhile, hit the road to take on Ringwood Town in Division 1 of the Wessex League.
The hosts took an early lead six minutes in, after Nicky Wyse was flagged offside while threatening at the other end.
Newport pushed back straight away from a corner, and eventually found the leveller on the stroke of half time – Wyse the difference maker.
Second half, Newport spurned a glorious chance to take the lead for the first time on the 56-minute mark, and the woodwork spared the hosts ten minutes thereafter.
On 80 minutes, another chance went begging – Josh Younie hitting the ball high after Wyse went down in the box.
Newport couldn’t find a late goal, and the game ended 1-1.
