NEWPORT survived an early scare to put Vectis to the sword and advance to the next stage of the Isle of Wight Gold Cup.
Newport welcomed fellow Island side Vectis to Beatrice Avenue, and it was the visitors who started the brightest.
Vectis thought they opened the scoring early in the first half, only to be denied by the offside flag.
Undeterred, they went on to force a save from Newport stopper Leon Pitman, and were soon rewarded for their early endeavour – scoring a sublime goal to take the lead.
Newport pushed for the equaliser, and following a string of corners, they eventually levelled – Michael Thomsett netting before the break.
Second half, Newport hit their stride, taking the lead three minutes in – Thomsett again finding space and converting from a cross.
Provider, Joe Craig, doubled his side’s advantage from the edge of the box soon after, and almost bagged a brace – Joe Butcher playing him in.
Ten minutes from the close, and substitute Louis Parsons netted his side's fourth to add some further gloss to the scoreline.
The game ended 4-1.
