ISLE of Wight football team Newport were bettered by mainland opposition tonight (Wednesday).

After ten days of inactivity, the Islanders hosted New Milton Town – the first of three consecutive home games.

Jordan Browne opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes, and a Joe Craig header on 22 minutes doubled Newport’s advantage.

Despite a strong start, New Milton found their footing – wasting a chance from the penalty spot but pulling a goal back on 33 minutes.

Newport took their narrow lead into the break, with Joe Butcher almost restoring the Islanders’ two-goal advantage – forcing a good save on 42 minutes.

Second half, it was New Milton who started the better of the two sides, and netting an equaliser on 55 minutes.

Soon after, the visitors spurned a great chance to take the lead – striking the post.

Undeterred, New Milton did find the net on 74 minutes, leaving Newport trailing briefly.

The Islanders hit back three minutes thereafter – Joe Craig netting the leveller.

Stopper Leon Pitman denied New Milton late on, but it was the mainlanders who managed to score the final goal of the game to make it 4-3.
