ISLE of Wight cyclists James Brett and Oli Nolan just came up short in the seventh round of the Wessex Cyclocross season.
The Wightlink Wight-Mountain team members travelled to Cannon Heath Down, near Newbury, and rode on a course they described as being "bafflingly dry" following all the rain brought down by Storm Ciaran recently.
On a tricky course, Brett was first to race in the Vet 40-49 category.
After battling well in the early stages, he crashed on a downhill section of the second lap, twisting his bars in the process.
However, Brett fought hard to limit the damage, finishing in the middle of the 80-strong field — a creditable result under the circumstances.
Nolan, in the final race of the day, was looking to keep up his streak of top ten finishes.
Starting on the second row of the grid, he battled hard against riders in another stacked group, which included several neighbouring league members, due to their event being cancelled.
Making use of long hill to put power down, Nolan crossed the line in a respectable 11th.
