A YOUNG Isle of Wight speedway star is making waves on the mainland.
Jack Scully-Syer, 13, has been riding since he was just seven years old, and moved onto a 150cc speedway bike earlier this year.
The Ryde Academy student, who lives in Ryde, has been taking part in demonstration races at Smallbrook on Thursday evenings.
But the Scunthorpe League is open to anyone, and to further develop as a racer, his family thought it would be beneficial for him to take part.
“On the Island, Jack races against the same riders each week,” said his mother, Charlotte.
“In Scunthorpe, he is racing against other riders, which of course is how he will learn and grow as a rider.
“He thoroughly enjoyed taking part. The only element he wasn’t keen on was the travelling.
“He would leave the Island on a Saturday night, travel to Leicester, then continue the journey on Sunday to Scunthorpe, ready for tapes up at 11am.”
Jack pushed himself to go faster with each meeting; his fastest time being 72.42 seconds over four laps.
He took part in four races, securing two first place finishes, one second, and a third.
This meant he went on to take part in the final, and won, ending with a final score of 72 points, finishing second overall, just a point shy of the league leader.
A total of 11 riders from across the country took part, but Jack was the only participant from the Island, and will now be putting his name forward for the Scunthorpe winter league, which kicks off in October.
