VENTNOR Cricket Club captain Ben Woodhouse has been banned for two matches for a "serious dissent" in their recent Southern Premier Division One defeat by Hook and Newnham Basics, at Steephill.

The Isle of Wight club was also deducted two points after Woodhouse was charged with the Level 2 misconduct offence involving an umpire.

A spectator, who saw the incident, said: "I think it was one of those things done in the heat of the moment. These things do happen, but unfortunately there are consequences.

"I do not know if an apology from Ben was forthcoming."

The wicketkeeper, who recently broke his thumb, will miss Ventnor's next two matches against Sarisbury Athletic and Portsmouth.

The knock on effect of that is Ventnor's points tally has been reduced to 134, with the club dropping to eighth place in the table.

They remain well clear of struggling Hambledon and New Milton, the bottom two.

UPDATE: 1.08PM

In a statement from the club, it reads: "Ventnor Cricket Club accepts the decision of the Southern League disciplinary adjudicator and will not be making any further comment at this time."
