TEAMIOW'S Isle of Wight clay shooters mastered the blustery conditions in Guernsey to win FOUR gold medals on Day 3 of the Island Games 2023. 

A spokesperson for the shooting team was delighted by the medal haul, and the achievement in such difficult circumstances. 

"We had a very windy day at the Mont Herault range yesterday (Monday) for the individual sportrap competitions.

"The wind didn’t drop at all, which made some of the target presentations very tricky." 

A strong performance from Jennie Cartwright in the women’s competition saw her win her second gold of the games, scoring 80 out of 100.

Jennie said: "It was tough out there today with the wind, and also the noise, making it very difficult to concentrate — but I was very happy with how I shot."

In the men’s competition, Dan Bishop shot well to come away with an 85 — a score equalled by a Guernsey shooter.

Mark Downer put in an 81, along with four other shooters, so spectators had the treat of seeing shoot-offs for the medals.

The gold medal was awarded to Dan after a shoot-off against Guernsey's John Wild.

The bronze medal was awarded to Martin Kneen of Isle of Man after a four-way shoot off with Mark, Jack Kneen (Isle of Man) and Greg Sanderson (Jersey).  

Clay team captain Jennie added: "The guys did so well. It’s hard to imagine the pressure of a shoot-off as it’s difficult to train for, but Dan did so well to hold his nerve.

"Mark did really well too and should be proud of how he shot. I am really proud of them both."

Jennie received her gold medal after winning the women's individual sport trap, from Jorgen Peterson, the Island Games president.

The men’s medal ceremony has been delayed until Thursday.

The team has a day off today and are planning to visit some of the other sports, and do a bit of sight seeing, then are back in action tomorrow (Wednesday).
