AN ISLE of Wight footballer became the youngest ever goalscorer in FA Cup history following Newport's extra preliminary round win against Fleet Town.
Finn Smith, aged 16 years and one day on matchday, scored the Island side's third goal, writing himself into the history books as the youngest ever goalscorer on record.
To play in the FA Cup, players must be 16 years or over, with the previous goalscoring record set at 16 years and 25 days.
Smith had only joined Newport the day before and entered the game as a substitute in the second half.
Newport comprehensively beat Fleet Town 3-1 on the road last Saturday (August 6).
At the ten-minute mark, Connor Kelly put his side in front from the spot.
Defender, Scott Sampson, was called upon to clear his lines soon after as the hosts sought parity.
Despite Newport playing largely on the front foot, Fleet Town found the equaliser, levelling through a headed effort.
But after the break, the visitors restored their lead through Jordan Browne — Jacob Reynolds with the assist.
Newport controlled proceedings thereafter, and Kelly turned provider to set up Finn Smith, who slotted home with composure to secure the record and a place for his side in the next round.
