SPEEDWAY at the Smallbrook Stadium was brought to a premature end following a shuddering last-race crash involving Kiwi racer George Congreve.
The handicap meeting produced some spectacular racing, but the grand final was halted when Congreve misjudged his path and hit the safety barrier at high speed.
He needed extended treatment for suspected damage to his legs and ribs, and with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service called to the track, the meeting was abandoned — the final result undetermined.
A trip to the hospital revealed Congreve did not suffer any breaks or major injuries, and he was able to return to his mainland base the next day.
Other finalists included Connor Coles, Rhys Naylor, Henry Atkins, Chris Watts and Alex Spooner.
After discussions, they agreed to split the prize pot six ways, with some planning to pass their shares onto Congreve to help offset the hefty repair costs for his bike and Kevlar suit.
Wightlink Warriors co-owner, Barry Bishop said: “What great news we have had overnight.
“The hospital has given George the ‘all clear’ to return home and he’s now back on the mainland.
“We all wish George a speedy recovery. He has been a breath of fresh air with his all-action style and engaging personality.”
Meanwhile, in the development challenge event, Wightlink Warlocks beat the Wightlink Wizards by 20 points to 16, with Morgan Williams unbeaten for the Warlocks.
