Tulisa Contostavlos is one of the stars taking part in the 2024 series of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and is known for being part of the band N-Dubz.

Her dad, Plato Contostavlos, was one of the main members of the Mungo Jerry blues band, so some people might be curious to know if her mum was also involved in the music industry.

Tulisa's mum is Anne Byrne who was part of the music scene in the 1980s.

She performed with her three sisters in the lively big band and swing ensemble Jeep, RSVP reports.

Tulisa has been quite open to discussing her and her mum's difficult relationship, as Anne was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder 17 years ago.

In the 2010 BBC documentary Tulisa: My Mum and Me, she mentioned the complexities of the condition which is characterised by symptoms of schizophrenia alongside a mood disorder, such as bipolar or depression.

She revealed how the strain of caring for her ill mother drove her to fraternise with a gang and dabble in alcohol and drugs, The Daily Record reports.

Tulisa stated: "One of the worst things about dealing with my mum was how helpless and alone I felt at such a vulnerable age."

She expressed frustration over medical professionals' inability to manage her mother's volatile behaviour, confessing: "The doctors didn't seem to be able to stabilise my mother's moods and I felt myself being dragged further and further down by the environment I was forced to live in."

"Music and my dream of becoming a success was all that kept me going through those very dark times," she continued.

Her respite came in the form of increased visits to her aunt's home after her father Plato departed from their family unit.

Describing her mother's reaction to her dad leaving, Tulisa recalled: "My dad left home and it triggered one of her episodes.

"One minute she'd look all mournful as if someone had died, the next she'd be angry and aggressive, smashing cupboards and shouting.

"Inevitably, she went into hospital again and I stayed with my mum's older sister, Louise. She had children of her own and it was felt she was more able to look after a young girl.

"I used to dread my mum getting better and coming home because it would mean I'd have to leave my aunt's house where I felt safe and happy and normal."

Despite the challenges they faced, the mother-and-daughter duo have kept their bond intact over the years.
