Ryde Academy has been selected to receive one of the National Trust's 49 'Trees of Hope' sycamore saplings.

Announced during National Tree Week, the initiative follows the felling of the beloved Sycamore Gap tree.

Ryde Academy students are currently designing a memorial garden to honour Chris Koppany and other students who have died.

Applications for the saplings, grown from the tree's seed, reached nearly 500.

The Tree of Hope will be a key feature of this garden, symbolising hope, remembrance, and growth.

Will Doyle, head of school, said: "We are truly thankful for this wonderful gift. We are committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of our community and the Tree of Hope will be a beautiful addition to our memorial garden, which will serve as a peaceful and contemplative space for both students, staff and the local community to remember, heal and grow.

"This very special tree will also serve as a constant reminder to us all that out of tragedy as a community can bring togetherness and hope within our wonderful community."

The saplings, currently nurtured at the charity's Plant Conservation Centre, are expected to be ready for planting by winter 2025/26.
