Over the past 24 years, his winter wonderland has raised more than £40,000 for various Island causes.

These include Medina House School and Help4Heroes.

Terry said: "When I think back to when it all started, with just a few lights and reindeers in the garden, it's amazing how it has all developed into what it is today."

The High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, Graham Biss, joined the crowd last night (Saturday, November 30) to lead a countdown to the big switch-on.

He then presented Terry and his wife, Sue, with a certificate of achievement for their services to the community.

Terry added: "This event has a lot of meaning for Sue and I, so when we received the award out of the blue, it brought a tear to our eyes."

The retired artexer and dry liner starts setting up the lights in October each year, and is constantly making adjustments.

He said: "The only disappointment on the night was the snow machine malfunctioning, but I should have that working again soon."

The light display attracts visitors from across the Island, with Terry encouraging donations for his chosen charities.

Despite the huge hike in his first electricity bill of the new year, Terry insists the event is worth it.

"Seeing the bill gives me a bit of a turn, but thanks to the Isle of Wight Council making a donation, it takes the punch out of it," he said.

"But if the kids are smiling and everything works out alright, it's all worth it."
