Almost half of November's average rainfall fell on the Isle of Wight in just 24 hours, the Environment Agency has said.

Overnight into today (Wednesday), the Island saw up to 45mm of rain at the EA's Calbourne rain gauge.

As previously reported, the torrential downpours led to flooding of roads and, in some areas, even properties.

The EA said the total rainfall equated to around 40 per cent of what is typically recorded in the entire month of November on the Island.

Altogether, six flood alerts and two flood warnings were issued by the EA, including for Carisbrooke, Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbride and Alverstone.

A spokesperson for the EA said: "There were field teams working on the Island all day Wednesday to minimise the impacts of flooding from rivers and streams.

"They cleared 15 to 20 debris grills, and where possible any blockages to watercourses these included Monktonmead Brook, Lukely Brook and Eastern Yar.

"A team were also monitoring the water levels at Monktonmead Flood Alleviation Scheme to make sure they were ready to deploy the scheme should the watercourse break its bank and pose a flood risk to the community there."

The EA said the rain is now moving away but we expect to see the Eastern Yar to continue to rise as water drains from roads and land.

A flood warning remains in force for Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge, Alverstone on the Eastern Yar, while an alert is still in place for the Eastern Yar.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely", the spokesperson said.

Morton Common, Sandown, which runs adjacent to the Yar, is heavily flooded once again.

Members of the public can report flooding to the EA's 24/7 incident number: 0800 80 70 60.
