They have shared a series of tips to help consumers stay safe, including researching new companies before buying, only providing necessary details, and using strong, unique passwords.

They also advise that using a credit card for purchases over £100 offers added protection and urge people to read the small print, especially regarding returns and delivery costs.

What to do if you have concerns about being scammed

For advice on scams call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454-040506, or the Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership (IWASP) by visiting www.iwasp.org.uk, or to report a scam, call Action Fraud on 0300-1232040.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards said: "It’s important to make sure that we do all we can to stay safe to ensure that we don’t get scammed at what is probably the most expensive time of year for most of us."

The organisation also stresses the importance of ensuring websites are secure, with web addresses showing "https://" and a green padlock.

They also suggest not using the same password for all accounts, and highlight the fact that a password comprising three words, a number, and a capital letter takes up to 100,000 years to crack.

By following these guidelines, Trading Standards hope to help consumers avoid potential scams during the busy festive shopping period.
