An Isle of Wight man’s cannabis stash landed him in court after police were able to sniff it out inside his home.
Kevin Hickey, of Wavesound Close in Bembridge, attended the IW Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 19, and pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled drug of Class B, namely cannabis.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police attended the 50-year-old’s address at 7.30pm on October 14 following reports of concern for welfare.
Ms Miller told the court that, upon arrival, officers could smell cannabis and found the drug stashed inside Hickey's home.
Magistrates heard Hickey had been previously handed a caution by police and was not eligible for an out-of-court disposal, which had brought him before them.
Oscar Vincent, defending, said police did not attend his client’s address due to any criminal activity, and officers found a “very small amount” of cannabis, which was for personal use by Hickey.
Mr Vincent told the court Hickey was not arrested or interviewed by police.
Hickey admits using cannabis, for medical purposes rather than recreational, due to head and rib injuries he suffered following a previous incident.
Magistrates handed Hickey a six-month conditional discharge.
