An attempted 'knifepoint robbery' near a children's playground is being investigated by police on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it received reports of an incident at Simeon Street Recreation Ground, Ryde, on Monday, November 18.

It is believed to have happened at around 9.30pm.

Police said it was reported a man had been approached by a second man, who demanded he hand over his possessions.

The County Press has been told a knife was brandished in the incident.

It is understood the second man was wearing all black and had his face covered.

Police have said the first man left the area quickly, having not handed anything over.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

Simeon Street Recreation Ground is popular among families, who take their children to the playground there.
