An Isle of Wight woman dropped her trousers during an incident with a Samurai sword on street in Ryde during the summer.

Kelsea Broadfoot, of School Street in Ryde, attended the IW Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 19, and pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in a public place.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police were called to an incident in the middle of a street on August 2 and, upon arrival, found the 53-year-old with a Samurai sword and her trousers dropped down to her ankles.

Broadfoot was under the influence of alcohol and was initially arrested on suspicion of multiple offences, the court heard.

Ms Miller said officers measured Broadfoot’s sword and found it to be 66cm long.

Magistrates ordered the weapon’s destruction.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client is medically retired but does voluntary charity work and has not troubled the court system for over 20 years.

Mr Vincent said Broadfoot had recently suffered a bereavement after her long-term partner died and she became estranged from some members of his family, which affected her mental health conditions.

Mr Vincent told magistrates that Broadfoot, in the run up to the incident, had been verbally abused and humiliated due to a 'lifestyle choice' she made.

Broadfoot has no memory of the incident and has since sought professional help, said Mr Vincent.

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report and adjourned the case for sentencing on January 31, 2025.
