With just 38 days until Christmas, hundreds of Islanders flocked to the county town, hoping to make up for the cancellation of last year's event.

Throughout the day, St James’ Square was closed to traffic and a stage was erected for live entertainment.

Crowds were treated to performances from Maurice Kachuk, Huxley Magic, The Jimi and Anne Duet Show, Vectis Brass Band, The Starlight Academy and singer, Emelia.

In St Thomas’ Square, there were fairground rides courtesy of family-run business, Vintage Island Amusements.

Visitors may have also noticed a Charles Dickins living statue, as well as special appearances by characters from Enchanted Isle.

Newport Minster provided additional holiday spirit with an indoor Christmas market, filled with seasonal gifts and treats.

Among the other main attractions was the popular indoor ice rink, this year found inside Town Lane’s Parish Centre.

At 6pm, hoards of people lined St James' Square as Santa, with help from Mrs Claus, brought an end to festivities by switching on the town's Christmas lights.

Looking ahead, the festive cheer continues with Newport Carnival’s Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 7.
