A CENTENARIAN Isle of Wight man whose former career as a chef saw him work at two of the world's most famous hotels — The Ritz and The Savoy in London — will be cooking up a storm in aid of BBC Children in Need.

Bill Smith — a spritely 103-year-old who swims and walks regularly — will be putting his toque blanche and apron back on to cook a sumptuous meal for his fellow residents, at Briary Court residential retirement complex in Cowes, tomorrow (Friday, November 15).

Dinner will be served at 6.30pm, with Bill footing the bill for all the ingredients — asking only for donations for the national charity, which supports disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

Since the charity was launched in 1980, more than £1 billion has been raised.

Here's what Bill will be serving up for residents

Starter: Lemon, melon and orange cocktail

Main course: Breast of chicken with sweetcorn wrapped in bacon in a white wine cream sauce, with fondant potatoes and shredded vegetables.

Dessert: Tarte aux Prunes

Residents will be bringing their own drink to the dinner.

Bill, a resident of the Isle of Wight since 1970, was well known on the Island to many aspiring young chefs, as the former Head of Catering and Community Studies at the Isle of Wight College.

But his career in kitchens has taken him to the very best hotels in London — namely The Ritz and The Savoy.

And kind-hearted Bill, who hails from Wales, is no stranger to fundraising either.

He has raised thousands of pounds for charities over the years, but in more recent times, Bill has done his bit in aid of the NHS and the devastating earthquakes of Turkey and Syria, as a centenarian.

Bill was married to Ruth and the couple had children, Maretta and Peter, and three grandchildren.
