For those who enjoy scenic coastal walks with a touch of countryside charm, the 3.7-mile route from St Helens to Seagrove Bay on the Isle of Wight is a hidden gem.

The walk offers a blend of natural beauty and local history, ideal for a leisurely half-day outing showcasing the best of the Island’s coast.

Starting at St Helens Green, this picturesque walk takes you through a mix of woodland, beach and open countryside, with historical landmarks and sweeping sea views.

Begin your adventure at the free public car park on St Helens Green, near the walker-friendly pub, The Vine Inn.

St Helens seafrontSt Helens seafront (Image: Alan Henning) From here, follow the Vine Road downhill and follow left into Lower Green Road, passing a garage, restaurant, book shop and cafe before turning into Mill Road.

Follow around The Mill House and join footpath R86, crossing the historic causeway, where the marshland opens up to reveal The Duver.

This National Trust-managed area is a mix of sandy dunes and salt marsh, perfect for birdwatching.

Head towards the distinctive beach huts in the distance and reach the promenade and sandy beach, where you will encounter the striking seamark – what remains of the original St Helens Church.

Leaving the seamark, rejoin the path and pass through a Ramblers gate, following footpath R85 uphill.

The trail winds through scrubland and fields, offering glimpses of the surrounding countryside.

At the metal kissing gate, the walk transitions to a scenic coastal path, leading past The Priory Hotel, and, at the double set of brick pillars, take the path left R84.

Soon, you will descend towards the golden sands of Seagrove Bay, a serene spot ideal for a short rest to take in the coastal beauty.

Retrace your steps briefly before continuing on footpath R83, which meanders along hedgerows with views of the iconic Bembridge Lifeboat Station. 

Cross a stile to follow the path towards Eddington Road, a quiet country lane.

Turn right and cross the road to follow footpath R82, which leads past a school and back to the heart of St Helens, where you will emerge beside The Vine pub.
