AN ISLE of Wight man caught drug driving in Sandown by patrolling police officers has been banned from the road.

Callum Steele, of Victoria Avenue, Shanklin, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, November 12.

The 30-year-old admitted drug driving on Fort Mews in Sandown, on May 12.

Prosecutor, Lauren McConnell, said police officers were on routine patrol in Sandown at around 5.50pm.

She said their attention was drawn to a black Audi travelling along Avenue Road and a check of the vehicle was carried out.

Its driver, Steele, was stopped, and registered a reading of 17.5 for cannabis when the specified limit is 2.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said there had been no suggestion of bad driving on Steele’s part and he was fully cooperative with the police procedure.

He said Steele’s vehicle was correctly documented and he hadn’t consumed cannabis on the day.

Steele, who has 23 previous offences to his name, including several drug-related matters, was fined £415 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £166 surcharge.
