THE Falkland Islands government has signed a 'letter of intent' with Britten-Norman on the Isle of Wight to purchase four new aircraft at a total cost of £7.97 million.

This order for BN2B-26 Islander aircraft is part of a plan to modernise the Falkland Islands Government Aviation Service (FIGAS) fleet, which is celebrating 75 years of operation.

The order is in addition to two aircraft that Britten-Norman is already contracted to build for FIGAS, the first of which is now in service.

All new aircraft will be delivered from Britten-Norman’s UK manufacturing line in Bembridge.

This line was launched in late last year, after the company re-shored it from overseas.

FIGAS, an integral part of Falkland life since 1948, operates five Islanders in a variety of roles, including air ambulance, postal carrier, freight and scenic flights, to keep the Falklands and its remote communities connected.

The BN2B-26 Islander has been a key part of the FIGAS fleet, due to its exceptional short take-off and landing capability.

The durability of this aircraft type has been proven over the six decades that FIGAS has operated its fleet of Islanders.

The decision to select new Islanders as a replacement for the existing fleet, was based on an assessment of which aircraft best suits the tough operating conditions in the Falkland Islands.

William Hynett, chief executive at Britten-Norman, said: "We are so pleased to have such an incredible opportunity to build a new chapter in our long-standing relationship with the Falkland Islands government — and to continue to support the communities of these important islands.

"Our relationship with FIGAS is an exemplar of the benefits that can be achieved in private/public sector cooperation.

"As one of our most valued long-term partners, we rely on crucial feedback from FIGAS and work hard to use this knowledge to further refine our products and services."

The order is significant for Britten-Norman, as it contributes to the company's growth plans, which include expanding to meet the regional aircraft market surge.
