A 24-YEAR-OLD Isle of Wight man was caught drug driving during a check of his Skoda Fabia car's suspect tyres.

Kerry Jacobs, of Spring Walk, Newport, was almost five times the legal limit after using cocaine.

He admitted to drug driving on April 19, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

The court heard how Jacobs was pulled over on Pyle Street for having suspected 'bald' tyres.

Officers, suspecting Jacobs of drug driving, then also gave him a roadside drugs swab, which returned a positive result, and he was arrested.

Tests at Newport Police Station revealed Jacobs had 240mg/l of cocaine metabolite BZE in his blood — almost five times the legal limit of 50.

Cannabis was also found in his system, but within legal limits.

Jacobs, who has no previous convictions, was said to have taken cocaine the previous day to "de-stress" after a difficult relationship.

His solicitor, Nick Muir, said: "He had a lot of stress and took cocaine. He didn't realise he couldn't drive the next day after using it — but he has learned his lesson now.

"Cannabis, which helps him sleep, was below the limit.

"The aggravating factor was that he had two drugs in his system, but there was no suggestion of bad driving."

Jacobs was made subject to an interim driving ban and will be sentenced on January 10.
