A popular Isle of Wight route has reopened in Shanklin following a series of delays to repair work.

Landguard Road and Landguard Manor Road, which run between High Street and Sandy Lane, were first closed at the end of September.

The project involved digging up the roads to fix underlying problems which had led to surface damage.

Due to the depth of the works, the roads were closed throughout the project, which was carried out in six phases to "minimise disruption".

The works were initially expected to finish on Friday, October 1, but the final phase of works “took longer than expected”, Island Roads revealed.

This was due to several factors, including wet weather and the discovery of multiple voids linked to utility services in the area.

It was then hoped the roads would reopen earlier this week, on Wednesday, but Island Roads said a water leak at the junction of Landguard Road and High Street caused some further delays.

This morning (Friday), Island Roads confirmed the remaining base material work in the area had been completed, with the final surface works and carriageway lining carried out overnight.

The two roads have now reopened.
