Our new series is putting a spotlight on Isle of Wight pubs.

Last time, we shined a light on The Solent Inn in Ryde.

This time, we went to Chillerton to find out about The Gallybagger Inn, which doubles as a community centre.

Run by the Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association (CGCA), the Gallybagger received National Lottery funding and opened in June 2021 after a refurbishment.

The pub, based in the old Chillerton reading rooms, features a full-size snooker table and holds regular nights of music, quizzes and craft groups.

Secretary of CGCA, Paula Poulter, said: "We managed to get some ex-school staff room chairs from somewhere, and we opened as Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association pub.

"That sounded long-winded, so we thought we'd call it the Gallybagger because of the scarecrow festivals we have once every two years, and the Gallybagger is the Isle of Wight name for a scarecrow.

"And we've just gone from strength to strength really."

The pub is open every Friday, Saturday and Monday night, but can also open on request for large groups.

Its walls are painted green and blue, denoting the sky and the downs around the village.

Pints of beer are between £3 and £3.90, while cans of soft drinks are £1.

The pub has proved popular with cyclists, runners and walkers, as well as locals in Chillerton.

Paula said: "It's great, you feel much more part of a community, rather than just shutting your door at night time.

"There are people around that would help.

"There's one woman who lives up the road who has said 'I've been in the village 26 years, it's only in the last few years I've really felt part of the village because suddenly places like this become accessible'."
