Isle of Wight players excelled in the Hampshire Chess Congress.

The Island players took part in the congress held at the weekend from Friday to Sunday, and showed impressive skills in the run-up to the Wightlink Isle of Wight Chess Tournament in February.

In the Minor section, David Lightfoot stood out, tying for third place with a score of three-point-five out of five.

He overcame several higher-rated opponents and bagged the rating prize for his effort.

Phil Stevens also had a good run in the Minor section, finishing fourth with three points from five games.

David Williams completed the Isle of Wight's success in the Minor section, also tying for fourth with another three out of five finish.

In the Major section, Richard Edney took second place with a solid four out of five.

In the Open section, Islander David Collyer achieved a personal best by tying for second place with a score of 3.5 out of five.

Collyer narrowly missed out on the Hampshire Trophy, awarded to the highest-placed local player in the Open, because of a tiebreak rule.

However, he did win the Len Walters trophy for best Under 1950 Hampshire player.
