AN ISLE of Wight man left wheelchair-bound after a horrific rugby injury and needing to raise thousands of pounds to have his home adapted, is set to benefit from a charity fundraising gala.

Luke Orton was left paralysed from the chest down, after suffering a severe injury during the South Island Rugby Sevens tournament, in Ryde, in July last year.

The injury resulted in a neck fracture and spinal cord injury, which led to him undergoing ongoing long-term treatment and rehabilitation.

Luke, 27, needs £20,000 to adapt the family home in Alpine Road, Ventnor.

That money could be raised at the Regain Gala Dinner on Wednesday (November 6), which would enable him to leave hospital and return home to his parents, Tony and Lesley.

The fundraising event by the national charity, Regain, is dedicated to supporting people with tetraplegia, a condition that causes paralysis of all four limbs.

Lord Ivar Mountbatten and Classic FM's Alexander Armstrong will host the gala, being held at The Peninsula, London.

The gala aims to raise £100,000 for the charity's ongoing projects.

The event includes a three-course meal, entertainment and an auction of rare items, with all proceeds going to Regain's causes, of which Luke is one.

Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Edinburgh, will be attending.

Calum Frampton, a director of the charity, said: "The Regain Gala Dinner is not only an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful evening, but also a chance to make a real difference — helping people with tetraplegia to live more fulfilled lives."

The gala is expected to draw in a wide range of attendees, including business leaders, philanthropists and Regain beneficiaries.

David Walker, the managing director of A2K Leisure, the company that owns the Albion Hotel on the Isle of Wight, is one of the expected guests.

For those who cannot attend the gala, but still want to support Luke and Regain, there are various ways to get involved.

These include an online prize draw, priced at £10 per ticket, and a silent auction featuring a selection of exclusive luxurious items.

More information on these supporting opportunities can be found on the Regain Sports Charity website.
