A MAN who managed to stay out of trouble for 18 years, before turning violent — punching and kicking police officers — was told by an Isle of Wight court to pay £200 in compensation.

Neville Sheen, of Oak Vale, Ryde, admitted being drink and disorderly in public, and two charges of assaulting emergency workers, namely police officers, in the execution of their duty, in High Street, Sandown, on May 16.

The 52-year-old's pleas were made at an earlier hearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

Officers were sent out to a derelict hotel following reports of criminal damage at the premises, with an accomplice, said Lauren McConnell, prosecuting.

The two men were located and arrested.

When Sheen was handcuffed, he punched one of the officers in the face, the court was told.

During attempts to restrain the former Sandown man, he kicked out and struck the other officer's knee, which caused him lasting pain.

Sheen, unemployed, appeared with a record of five convictions for six offences — the most recent of which dated back to 2006.

For Sheen, Tom Cooke said his client has no memory of the incident and it should be noted he hadn't offended in 18 years.

Sheen was handed a year's probation, which includes ten rehab sessions, and an order to pay each of the injured officers £100 compensation.
