Blackwater Mill: only care home on Isle of Wight to get worst rating

Of the 61 care homes across the Isle of Wight on the CQC radar, Blackwater Mill Residential Home, near Newport, is the only one to hold an 'inadequate' rating — the lowest that can be awarded.

An 'inadequate' rating means a care service is performing badly and that the CQC has taken enforcement action against the provider of it.

The inspection of the facility took place earlier this year. It failed on safety and its management. 

Care and effectiveness was also marked down as 'requires improvement', but 'good' on how responsive it is.

Failings reported by the CQC has led to the home being put in special measures.

Since then, the County Press has been speaking to those affected, from relatives of residents, to former staff members, in a special investigation.

There are two homes 'requiring improvement' — the Cherry Tree Care Home, Cowes, run by Cherry Trees IW Ltd, and 22, Argyle Street, Ryde, run by Southern Housing.

There are just two homes rated as 'outstanding' — Newport Residential Care Ltd, which specialises in mental health care, and Highfield House, Shanklin, run by Island Healthcare Ltd.

The vast majority of Island care homes, numbering 50, received a 'good' rating.

Six homes have not yet been rated by the CQC.
