AN ISLE of Wight woman caught drink driving in a car funded by her mobility allowance has been banned from the road.

Beverley Mitchell, of Niton Road, Rookley, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, October 22.

The 61-year-old admitted drink driving on Main Road in Rookley, on October 8.

Prosecutor, Lauren McConnell, said an off-duty police officer was parked outside the Co-op when Mitchell approached, driving a silver Kia, and narrowly missed their car.

Ms McConnell said Mitchell seemed unsteady on her feet, and when police attended her home address a short while later, they found her intoxicated.

The court heard her Kia was parked outside and she initially claimed her partner, and latterly a work colleague, had been driving the vehicle.

She registered a breath-alcohol reading of 61 when the legal limit is 35.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Mitchell was in receipt of mobility allowance and that’s how her vehicle had been supplied to her.

He said she was registered disabled following an injury with a catastrophic impact in 2011.

Mr Vincent said a severe family upset left her emotional on the day and she consumed alcohol at home before leaving to pick up a friend.

Mitchell was fined £120 and disqualified from driving for 17 months.

She was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge.
