HEAVY rain causing flooding to worst affected areas of the Isle of Wight, has led to the extension of a severe weather warning for heavy downpours.

After an afternoon of heavy rain, continuing well into the evening today (Monday), some reports of flooding and areas with large amounts of standing water have been received.

The Isle of Wight Met Service has issued a yellow weather warning, which came into effect at 12.30pm this afternoon, and which will run until 8pm tonight.

Jamie Russell, of the Isle of Wight Met Service, said: "Heavy downpours developed over southern and eastern parts of the Island earlier today, with some locations seeing in excess of 40mm of rain falling.

"Further downpours are likely in places, with as much as 20-30mm falling in some spots."

In Freshwater, Afton Road (pictured) has severe flooding outside the entrance to Tescos.

On the A3020, between Rookley and Godshill, there is plenty of standing water already, as heavy rain continues into the evening.

Island Roads has reported Collingwood Path in Shanklin, off Collingwood Road, has flooded and is closed with immediate effect.

Landguard Manor Road in Shanlklin has also been flooded in parts.

The national Met Office has not issued a weather warning for rain.
