A teenage shoplifter threatened to have a Co-op worker beaten up and told him "we will take what we want, when we want", a court has heard.

Kye Elliott, of Leed Street, Sandown, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday, October 11.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and one count of causing harassment, alarm or distress to a person.

Court heard how, on May 30, Elliott, 18, entered the Southern Co-op store in Avenue Road, Sandown and took cookies and cheese and bacon turnovers.

The following day he went in again and stole items from the hot food counter.

Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell, said the store's supervisor saw him and approached him about the recent shoplifting.

When he told Elliott he was banned from the store, the teenager replied saying "you don't know me" and "you're messing with the wrong person".

He went on to say: "We are going to come in when we want and take what we want."

He also threatened to have someone beat him up, Mrs McConnell said.

When interviewed by police, Elliott replied 'no comment'.

The other person involved admitted the offence and was given an out of court conditional discharge.

Defending, Oscar Vincent, said Elliott was trying to impress his friend and it was "big talk".

Magistrates told the 18-year-old he should choose his friends "a little bit more wisely".

Elliott was ordered to pay costs, including compensation to the supervisor, totalling £238.80.
