A woman has been named after falling overboard to her death on a cruise ship that was on the way to Southampton

Jessica Andrea Gómez Granda, a 28-year-old woman from Colombia, has been named by the Colombian consulate in London.

The 28-year-old had been travelling on the MSC Virtuosa when she was reported missing in the early hours of Saturday, October 12.

The consulate confirmed her body had been identified and that her family have been informed.

French search and rescue as well as charity Channel Island Air Search rushed to search for Jessica after the alarm had been raised.

Rescuers scoured the English Channel near Les Casquets, near the island of Alderney, at around 2am on Saturday.

The ship arrived into port at around 8.30am on Saturday, two hours and 15 minutes later than scheduled, according to ABP's shipping movements page.

In a statement a spokesperson for MSC Cruises said: "A guest on board MSC Virtuosa went overboard on October 12, while the ship was sailing to Southampton. The body was later recovered with the involvement of the authorities.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
