Breathtaking Isle of Wight walk to try at Wroxall Downs

This circular four-mile walk starts in the village of Wroxall and leads walkers through picturesque countryside, across fields and up to the iconic downs, where sweeping views of the Island await.

With its moderate challenges and peaceful setting, this walk is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in the Island’s natural beauty.

Begin your adventure at the free car park location on St Martins Road.

St Martins Down near Wroxall (Image: Rob Chiverton) As you traverse Luccombe Down and pass through a series of gates, the path begins to slope downhill, offering a change of pace.

Before setting off, you might catch a glimpse of the village’s charm, with its cottages and welcoming restaurant Smokin' Jack's – a great spot to visit after your walk for refreshments. 

The first leg of the walk immediately rewards those willing to tackle a steep ascent.

After turning right out of the car park and following a concrete path past a playground, you will descend a set of steps and cross two stiles into the lush countryside. 

Shortly after, a track that once belonged to the historic railway line leads you to a turnoff near Wroxall Manor Farm.

Here, you will pass through the farmyard on a concrete road, walking between rustic farm buildings, including an impressive stone barn and stables.

The climb may be the most strenuous part of the route, but the reward is well worth it.
Emerging from the trees, the landscape opens up, and you will find yourself on the vast open downland.

The view from the top is spectacular: the Island stretches out below, from Wroxall village nestled in the valley and the wooded estate of Appuldurcombe House visible in the distance.

The path winds its way towards a distinctive lattice radar tower, and, on a clear day, the views are far-reaching.

As you walk along the ridge, with a fence on your right, the track curves gently before descending slightly.

Bridleway V45 leads you down into a gap in the shrub, guiding you back toward Wroxall.
Be sure to keep an eye on the landscape as it changes from open downland to wooded paths, providing a variety of scenery throughout the walk. 

Eventually, the path brings you to the outskirts of the village, where it joins Castle Road.

As you descend into the village, you will find yourself back, where you started at the car park.
While the walk offers a delightful experience, it involves negotiating stiles, steps, and some fairly steep hill walking, making it moderately challenging. 

Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and take your time, especially on the steeper sections.
