An Isle of Wight monkey has been confirmed as the oldest ever record of her species after celebrating her 28th birthday.

Treacle, a Javan langur, has lived at the IW Primate Rescue Centre (Monkey Haven) in Newport.

Javan langurs, which have an average life expectancy of around 20 years, are primarily leaf eaters but also enjoy small amounts of seeds, fruits, flowers, bark, and fungi.

They live on the islands of Java, Bali, and Lombok in Indonesia, in tropical rainforests, deciduous and mangrove forests and marshes.

Treacle has been a resident of Newport since December 2012, arriving from Kent.

In 2014, Treacle, along with two of her friends, caused their keepers a bit of a fright when they managed to break their way out of a door and get up on top of their enclosure!

After several minor operations and antibiotics, the infection sadly spread to Treacle’s eye, and eventually, it had to be removed.

Thankfully, she made a strong and surprisingly quick recovery and was soon back to her old self again.

Treacle celebrated her 28th birthday last Friday (October 11).

In a Facebook post, the Monkey Haven said: “We are so proud of this little lady. Here’s to many more years of our gorgeous Treacle.”
