Chair of Isle of Wight Council says Island Roads "needs an enema"

Cllr Karl Love has expressed frustration over ongoing roadworks on York Avenue, criticising the approach taken by highway service.

Improvement works are being carried out by Island Roads on the main route out of the town, with three-way traffic lights in place, causing significant delays for motorists.

These works are scheduled to continue until Friday, October 25.

He said: “We’re all bogged up and bunged up in East Cowes thanks to Island Roads, who need an enema for leaving the road almost entirely empty for 150m on a busy weekend.”

Cllr Love expressed particular frustration over the presence of cones and traffic lights, despite there being no visible work or hazards requiring them.

“There is not a single reason or a hole in the road for having these cones in place,” he continued.

“We have traffic lights in place over the weekend when the workers don’t work, and there is no need for them to be there.”

Roadworks and the 'bog' left behind on York Avenue in East Cowes (Image: Cllr Karl Love) Although Island Roads had removed their equipment from the road, Cllr Love noted that: “We’ve got 150 meters of empty road apart from the bog they left behind and the cones which are protecting absolutely nothing.”

He described the situation as a “wind up” for East Cowes residents and said it causes him “nothing but grief and time.”

Cllr Love added that he had raised the issue at a Neighbourhoods and Regeneration meeting with senior managers at Island Roads on October 3, but the situation persisted.

"There’s no reason at all for these cones to be there over the weekend, and it just frustrates everybody and damages the reputation of Island Roads,” he said.
