A main Isle of Wight road out of Ryde will be closed today (Monday, October 21) to allow for improvement works.

Appley Road in Ryde, the main route out of the town to Seaview and Nettlestone, will be closed at all times during the works.

The roadworks are expected to be finished in ten days (Thursday, October 31).

Deep excavations will be made by Island Roads, which is carrying out the work, to tackle issues that have caused Appley Road to deteriorate.

Throughout the duration of the roadworks, diversions will be signposted.

The Appley Road project is part of several ongoing works across the Island, including Place Road in Cowes, which closed last Monday (October 14).

Island Roads said it understands there are many improvement works taking place across the Island, but potential impacts on the tourist trade stopped improvements from starting during the summer months.

A spokesperson for the highways service added: “We have to make the most of the period between the end of the main summer season and the onset of winter when we can expect the worst of the weather, which causes delays to work.

“While the work will improve the quality of some very busy roads, we do accept that there will be some inconvenience to road users, and we would like to thank them in advance for their understanding.”
