A main Isle of Wight road has been closed today (Monday, October 14) to allow for improvement works.

Place Road in Cowes, a major route out of the town, including for Red Jet travel, will be closed at all times for the duration of the work.

The roadworks are expected to be finished in two weeks (Monday, October 28).

Island Roads, which is carrying out the work, will make deep excavations to address issues that have caused Place Road to deteriorate.

Signposts showing diversions will be in place during the roadworks.

The project is part of a series of ongoing resurfacing works at sites across the Island, including Appley Road in Ryde, which gets underway next week.

A spokesperson from Island Roads said the highway service appreciates that it is a busy time, with improvements ongoing across the Island.

The aim was to reduce the number of roadworks during the busy summer months to not impact the tourism trade.

The spokesperson added: “We have to make the most of the period between the end of the main summer season and the onset of winter when we can expect the worst of the weather, which causes delays to work.

“While the work will improve the quality of some very busy roads, we do accept that there will be some inconvenience to road users, and we would like to thank them in advance for their understanding.”
