Our new series is putting a spotlight on IW pubs.

Last time, we shined a light on The Prince of Wales in Newport.

This week, we're going a short walk through the town to Holyrood Street's Newport Ale House.

Islander and owner Rod Kellaway has owned the pub since 2018, and has overseen Newport Ale House winning IW CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2019 and 2023.

Rod said: "We serve ale straight from the cask.

"There's no gravity and no hands pumps, and we're reasonably priced.

"Our ales are constantly changing: we do local ales and ones from all across the country.

"The furthest I've had one is the Orkney Islands in Scotland."

"We also don't do run-of-the-mill draft beers, there's natural ingredients in the lagers as well."

The pub is a small premises, with the bar a stone's throw from anywhere in the building.

Before the pandemic, the pub did live music, but it has now evolved into a place more for conversation.

"This place has become more like a talking pub."

"People go to other pubs up the town for the loud music, but it's also nice to have another pub around where people can relax, have a couple of beers, and talk to their friends without loud music going on.

"It's all different levels of people that come in here, young people, older people, middle-aged, there's lots of diversity in here which is really good."

The pub has a defibrillator, quiz nights and photographs of locals on the wall, as well as badges of the beers that the pub has served throughout the years.

"I think we're pretty unique.

"At the moment, I do believe we are the smallest pub on the Isle of Wight."

"There's no loud music, there's no TVs, there's no fruit machines.

"The board games are over there on the windowsill and our billiard table that one of my locals made up can come out.

"We have got a dart board but it doesn't get used that regularly, but we don't really have the space.

We don't want to kill anybody!"
