An Isle of Wight drug driver earned the suspicion of police after he was spotted ‘driving slowly’ up Newport’s dual-carriageway in the early hours.

Burhan Erkeles, of Newport High Street, attended the IW Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 1, and pleaded guilty to drug driving.

Lauren McConnell, prosecuting, said the 47-year-old was seen driving a Ford Focus on Medina Way (dual-carriageway) in Newport at around 1.30am by a police patrol.

Officers noted that Erkeles was driving slowly in the 70mph zone and pulled him over on Forest Road.

The court heard that Erkeles took a roadside DrugWipe test, which came back positive for cannabis.

Jim Osborne, defending, said his client admitted to smoking cannabis a few days earlier and deeply regrets his decision to drive.

Magistrates disqualified Erkeles from driving for 12 months and ordered him to pay a £369 fine, £148 in costs and an £85 surcharge.
