A second weather warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight - this time for torrential downpours.

As previously reported, a Met Office yellow alert for thunderstorms is already in place from 4pm today (Monday).

Now, the IW Met Service is warning of two spells of 'severe weather' in the next 48 hours.

The first, it says, will come into effect from this evening when "an area of torrential downpours will be developing, perhaps accompanied by hail and thunder in some areas."

"Rainfall totals will be extremely variable with some spots seeing just a few mm worth, whereas other locations could see 20-30mm falling in a short space of time", the IW Met Service said.

The second spell will be tomorrow (Tuesday), in the afternoon.

"Showers are likely to merge into longer spells of heavy, sometimes torrential rain, again with the risk of thunder in places.

"It also seems likely that the rain will be somewhat more widespread, meaning large rainfall amounts are possible over a wider area. Totals of 30-40mm are possible locally.

"Between these times we may still see a few rogue showers, potentially heavy enough to produce some localised flash flooding in places."

The IW Met Service warning comes into effect from 5pm tonight and lasts until 2am on Wednesday, October 9.
