ISLANDERS are being warned against responding to texts about parking fines from scammers.

The Isle of Wight Council has said it is aware of a scam, in which people are asked to pay a fine or face prosecution.

Victims are asked to click a link in the message, which takes them to a convincing copy of the official government website, complete with logos, branding and font.

They are then asked to provide personal and payment data to pay the fine.

The texts warn of increased charges, prosecution and court fees for those who fail to pay within 28 days.

What to do if you believe you are a victim of this scam

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, report the matter online to Action Fraud or call 0300 123 2040.

To make an official payment, you can find out more information on the Isle of Wight Council website.

The council said any legitimate charges relating to a penalty charge notice (PCN) should be paid via the details on the back of the notice, or statutory documentation, sent via the post.

Certificated enforcement agents may send text messages in relation to PCNs.

However, these will identify the enforcement agent, the appropriate contact details for the agent together with a specific case reference to enable the recipient to verify the message.

Mark Downer, the council's parking manager, said: "This scam is trying to get money out of anyone it can, regardless of whether or not they have had a PCN filed about their parking.

"If you receive a text message do not make any payment, or provide your bank details, and delete the text message."
